    PeePower™ – energy from urine

    The objective of the PeePower™ BUGA 2023 collaborative research project is to produce green hydrogen and platform chemicals from wastewater. This fits in nicely with BUGA 2023’s (German National Garden Show) four major themes, namely, climate, energy, environment and food security.

    Bioeconomy: Taking Microbes out of Dark and into the Light

    Microorganisms are the oldest, most abundant, and most diverse life forms on earth and offer enormous potential for biotechnological applications. To date, however, only a fraction of them could be isolated and cultivated. The “MicroMATRIX” research project, funded with € 1.5 million by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and led by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), aims to shed more light on the microbial darkness.

  • Dossier - 16/04/2012 Lichens: symbiotic organisms composed of fungi and algae. Living as a symbiont in a lichen enables the fungus to derive essential nutrients. The algae possess chlorophyll and can produce glucose, which the fungus needs. In return, the fungus provides the algae with a place to live, protects them against dehydration and enables the algae to live in environments where they would not normally be able to subsist.
